Our men’s plastic surgery patient Germaine Brisbane first started considering a surgical procedure for gynecomastia several years ago. It was our privilege to help this hardworking Dad achieve his goals and gain more confidence. Throughout the process, his positive, proactive attitude helped him get the results he wanted. Read our interview with him below to learn more about his procedure, and his recommendations for men considering surgery for gynecomastia.

PCPS: When did you first start considering a procedure?

Germaine: I started thinking about having surgery for my issue about six years ago. Since I was a kid, I’ve always had a little extra tissue. I was told early on it was part of puberty and would go away. I’ve always been a big guy; I was 6’2″ by the age of 12. Later in life, I thought I could correct it myself by working out more, losing some weight and gaining more muscle. As time went on, I realized this was a stubborn area that wasn’t responding even to my best efforts at the gym. When I first met with Dr. Widenhouse, I told him about wanting to go swimming with my kids. Even in the best shape of my life, I was embarrassed to take off my shirt at the pool.

PCPS: How was that initial consultation with Dr. Widenhouse?

Germaine: Before I went in initially, I did a lot of research about which doctor to choose. Dr. Widenhouse gave me great information and answered every question I had. He gave me options, too. I didn’t realize that there are multiple procedures used to address gynecomastia. Dr. Widenhouse helped by showing me before and after pictures that were similar to me. He worked with me to come up with the best option for me. He also recommended that I go and see an endocrinologist to determine whether or not there was an underlying issue contributing to my gynecomastia. When the endocrinologist’s tests came back, they confirmed that I had a hormonal imbalance. I was able to work with that doctor both before and after my surgery to correct the root problem. I was both happy and surprised that Dr. Widenhouse addressed this in my initial consult! Without getting the imbalance corrected, the surgery may not have been as effective. Dr. Widenhouse’s knowledge and recommendation shows he cares and is really aware of the patient’s holistic health.

PCPS: How was the procedure itself? How was recovery and the attention/follow-up from the doctor and his staff?

Germaine: April the Physician’s Assistant really shined. She stayed in touch with me, and made me feel very well taken care of. When I went home after the surgery, I had some anxiety because I was draining. I was able to call the Port City staff after hours and get the reassurance I needed; what I was experiencing was indeed normal. This was such a relief.

PCPS: Is there any advice you would give others considering surgery for gynecomastia?

Germaine: Oh yes, absolutely. Do your research! Look up procedures online and find a doctor who has a lot of experience. I was able to ask intelligent questions during my consult, and felt even more educated after speaking with Dr. Widenhouse. Despite my research, I had never thought an underlying hormonal imbalance would be my issue! In the end, I felt informed and confident enough to let Dr. Widenhouse make the final decision about my surgical procedure and do what he thought was best.

PCPS: What was the best thing about the surgery?

Germaine: Now I have so much more confidence, it’s like, let’s go swimming! I can be as active as I want to be with my kids. The surgery has really improved my lifestyle, and with Dr. Widenhouse’s guidance I was able to correct an underlying issue I’ve had all my life. I would recommend Port City Plastic Surgery to anyone considering surgery for gynecomastia. They really take care of you on all levels.
